What Is a Dental Emergency?

At our office, our rule of thumb is that if you think your condition is a dental emergency, it probably is. Any issue that is causing you serious pain, discomfort, or bleeding should be treated right away.

The most obvious dental emergencies are oral injuries. If your tooth is cracked, chipped, loose, knocked out of its socket, or driven back into the gum line, this is a serious issue. Lacerations to your gums, lips, tongue, and cheeks should also be treated by an emergency dentist. However, other common issues like a missing or loose filling or dental crown are also considered emergencies. This is because damage to your dental work can expose your vulnerable enamel and lead to further complications.

A serious toothache is also a dental emergency, as it may indicate damage to your tooth or even an infection. When in doubt, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Loveland Lakes Family Dentistry. It’s better to be safe than sorry!

What Should I Do If My Tooth Is Knocked Out?

- First, you should recover your tooth. If it’s dirty, do not wash it with soap. Instead, rinse it gently with warm water. Next, put the tooth back into its socket, if possible. If you can’t replace it in the socket, put it in a small baggie of cold milk.

- After this, contact Loveland Lakes Family Dentistry immediately to tell us that you’re coming in. Your tooth must be replaced within 1-2 hours for it to be saved, so don't wait!

- You can treat any bleeding with clean gauze or cotton balls. For your pain and discomfort, you can take ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve). These NSAIDs can help with both pain and swelling. You can also use an ice pack, applied externally to the cheek, for pain relief and to control swelling and inflammation.

- During a dental emergency, it is important to come to our office as soon as possible.

Do ERs Have Dentists? Can I Get Treatment At The Emergency Room?

In most cases, the ER does not have a dentist on-staff, so they are not able to provide you with adequate dental care. You may be referred to an outside dentist, or a dentist may be brought into the ER, depending on your case.

Because of this, it only makes sense to go to the ER if you have an oral health condition that you genuinely believe is life-threatening. For example, if you or a loved one has a broken jaw due to a car accident, this demands treatment in the emergency room. Or, if you have an oral health issue that is interfering with breathing or swallowing, it may make sense to go to the ER.

But in most cases, even the most severe dental health issues, like a knocked-out tooth or deep cuts and lacerations to your gums, are not life-threatening, and should be treated by a same-day emergency dentist.

Seeing an emergency dentist ensures you get the proper care, and also saves you a lot of money due to the high cost of ER treatment. Dr. Marlor can resolve your issue and provide you with relief from your pain and discomfort while preventing further symptoms and complications related to your emergency dental issue.

Use your best judgment, and always make sure safety is your top priority. If you believe that your life is at risk because of a serious oral health problem, you should go to the ER. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to call Loveland Lakes Family Dentistry for a same-day consultation with Dr. Marlor to get the treatment you need.

Do You Offer Same-Day Appointments in Loveland?

Yes! We offer same-day appointments for all of our patients in Loveland. If you are coming in for an emergency appointment, we would ask that you give us a call at (970) 667-5424 to let us know about your condition and when you’re coming in, so that we can prepare. However, we also accept walk-in emergency patients at our office at 1907 N Boise Ave, Suite 4, Loveland, Colorado 80538.

Do You Offer Weekend Appointments?

Yes. We offer limited weekend appointments for patients with serious dental emergencies on a case-by-case basis. We ask that you contact us in advance at (970) 667-5424 to discuss your situation with one of our team members, and to see if you can get immediate same-day care on the weekend.

For example, if you have a knocked-out tooth, we will schedule you ASAP to ensure you get the care you need. But if you have a less serious issue, such as a filling that feels loose or has been pulled-out while eating, you may need to wait until Monday to get treatment. To ensure the safety of our patients, we prioritize those who have the most serious dental emergencies on weekends.

What Should I Bring With Me?

If your tooth has been knocked out, you will need to bring the tooth with you in a container of cold milk to keep it moist. If you have had a piece of dental work (filling, crown, etc.) knocked loose or pulled out, bring it along in a plastic baggie so that Dr. Marlor can examine it.

If you have a chipped or damaged tooth and can recover the fragments, these should also be brought with you to help Dr. Marlor assess the damage to your tooth. You should also bring your dental insurance card and cash, a check, or a credit card to cover any co-pays for treatment.

If you are unable to drive due to pain or discomfort or just want to have a bit more comfort during your appointment, you’re also free to bring a friend or family member along with you to your appointment. If you think you may require sedation during your treatment, this is highly recommended, since some methods of sedation will prevent you from driving yourself home safely.
