Periodontal Care in Loveland

Keep Your Gums Healthy

Periodontal disease affects nearly half of American adults.

Many people aren’t even aware that they have gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease.

Signs and symptoms of the early stages of gum disease include bleeding when you brush and floss, inflamed gums, and a receding gum line.

Dr. Christiansen will help save your smile with gentle, effective periodontal care.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is one of the most common dental health issues and it is caused by bacteria buildup on the teeth and gums, which leads to infection, inflammation, and swelling. Poor oral hygiene can play a large role in the causes of periodontal disease, though genetic factors also have an influence. Once gum disease progresses past the first stage, known as gingivitis, it is often irreversible. If you suspect that you may have gum disease, schedule an appointment right away for periodontal care.

What Are the Stages of Gum Disease?

The stages of gum disease are characterized by different symptoms:

- Gingivitis: Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease. At this point, the disease is still reversible as no permanent damage has been done to your teeth or gums. Symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding when you brush and floss, and inflamed gums. If left untreated, this issue can turn into a more advanced form of gum disease.

- Periodontitis: Periodontitis occurs when gingivitis is left untreated. At this point, pockets of bacteria have formed between your teeth and gums and it has begun to move toward your tooth roots, causing permanent damage. Although this damage is irreversible, it is still important to seek periodontal care right away, even at this stage, to prevent the condition from worsening.

- Advanced Periodontitis: The final, and worst stage of periodontal disease is advanced periodontitis. During this stage of gum disease, the supporting fibers and bone of your tooth are destroyed, and your teeth may become loose and begin to fall out. Ideally, you should seek periodontal care before this point, but if you find yourself at this advanced stage of periodontitis, you may be a good candidate for permanent restorative treatments such as dental implants.
