What Is Laughing Gas Sedation?

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) sedation is one of the most common, widely-used methods of sedation. In fact, it was first used in dentistry in the 19th century, so it has a long track record.

This method of sedation requires no pills or needles. Instead, Dr. Marlor will place a comfortable breathing mask over your nose before your treatment begins. Then, he will adjust some machinery to send a stream of oxygen and nitrous oxide through the mask and into your lungs.

As soon as you breathe in, the nitrous oxide will enter your lungs and your bloodstream through the tiny capillaries in your lungs, taking effect almost immediately. You will feel less anxious, your pain tolerance will increase, and you’ll be able to relax during your appointment with Dr. Marlor.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Help With Dental Anxiety?

Nitrous oxide helps with dental anxiety in a few ways. First, it creates a feeling of peace and relaxation. It interacts with the brain to create a strong anti-anxiety effect, which is extremely beneficial if you have anxiety or are nervous about your treatment.

In addition to this, nitrous oxide helps reduce feelings of pain and discomfort, particularly when paired with local numbing. With a combination of numbing and nitrous oxide, you won’t have to worry about any pain.

There are a few other ways it helps with anxiety, too. Nitrous oxide helps with the fear of needles, which is really common even in people who may not be afraid of dentistry. It even helps suppress the gag reflex, which is beneficial if Dr. Marlor has to operate on the rear of your mouth.

The Effects And Side Effects Of Laughing Gas Sedation

The effects of laughing gas sedation are actually relatively mild. You will feel euphoric and happy, less anxious, and more comfortable. You may find certain things to be funny and you might even laugh, which is how nitrous oxide gets the name “laughing gas.”

However, you will be fully conscious and responsive to commands, and you will be aware of what’s happening around you. Nitrous oxide doesn’t put you to sleep or make you forget what happens during your appointment.

Another great thing about laughing gas sedation is that it wears off very quickly. At the end of your appointment, Dr. Marlor will pump pure oxygen through the nose mask to purge the remaining nitrous oxide from your system.

Within about 5 minutes, you’ll feel completely normal and you’ll be able to drive home or go back to work. You may experience some minor side effects like a headache, confusion, and dizziness, but these pass very quickly.
